The Wollongong City catchment is located in the Wollongong City Council local government area. It drains an area of approximately 7.3 km2 of mostly urbanised land from Coniston, Mangerton and Mt St Thomas to the west, Crown Street to the north and the sand dunes to the east. The flood water generally flows in a east and south direction discharging into Port Kembla Harbour via the Gurungaty Waterway.
More than 2500 commercial and residential properties in the Wollongong City catchment are flood prone (Figure 1). The south eastern areas of the CBD are relatively low lying and particularly prone to inundation by floodwater.
